Sphere System, Reading Socialist Party
Adam Gillman is the second youngest candidate anywhere in the country. He’s standing for the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) in Reading Central. Supporters from Oxford, Guildford, and Aldershot met up with Reading campaigners for a day of action on 23 June.
A large number of people we spoke to focused on housing as a key concern. Between predatory landlords and a lack of council housing, this comes as little surprise.
Another concern was over council services, especially waste collection, which is not sufficient. Given the recent rise in council tax, and further budget cuts, this is likely to get worse without change.
On the issue of housing, we raised the building of high-quality council housing, and introducing rent control. We also raised that Labour’s economic polices match the current Tory line.
And Labour councils have been setting cuts budgets, including in Reading, giving an idea of what we can expect from a Labour government.
On the day, we met four new people interested in joining the Socialist Party, while other people took an interest in our leaflets, and our public meeting, coming just before the election.
