Iain Dalton, Socialist Party Yorkshire
Socialist Party members were amongst the over 1,000 people marching.
Although the march was led by the ‘Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’ banner, marking the anniversary of the 1984-85 miners’ strike, it was followed by corporate floats and contingents such as Coca-Cola.
The largest section of the parade included contingents marching with banners from the unions – RMT, Unison and Unite. We had the best response to our socialist placards and leaflets from this section, with them snapped up rapidly.
On our Socialist Party stall before the march, we asked people, as they signed petitions on funding the NHS, defending trans rights, and scrapping the two-child benefit cap, what they thought of the new Keir Starmer government? “They’re not much different to the Tories”, was the most common answer, which is why the Socialist Party is fighting to build a new mass workers’ party.
