End war and oppression – Fight for socialist change
Saada Mohamed, Enfield and Lea Valley Socialist Party
The war on Gaza has been raging for now close to 11 months, which has meant almost a year of the brutal destruction of everything in the Gaza Strip from residential buildings to hospitals. Even refugee camps are not being spared from the full force of the Israeli state.
The Middle East seemingly edges closer to regional war, with even greater, more widespread misery for workers and poor people.
Many are watching this unfold on the news and social media, questioning what kind of sick system gives this ‘legitimacy’.
As a young person living in the UK, I saw the support the Israeli government has received from both parties, with Rishi Sunak meeting Benjamin Netanyahu early on in the conflict and Keir Starmer defending Israel’s right to turn off water for Gazan residents.
The recent Democratic National Convention in the US that confirmed Kamala Harris as candidate for the next president heard ‘Israel’s right to defend itself’ emphasised throughout. The official death toll of Palestinians is now over 40,000 and rising by the day.
Capitalist class
The Western capitalist class clearly has an interest in supporting the Israeli state for its own strategic and profit interests, specifically the US which has sent billions in aid to Israel.
The constant slaughter in Gaza and the relentless disregard for human lives in the Western media made me realise that under capitalism, working-class and poor people are seen as collateral damage. In this conflict it is possible up to 200,000 people have died, thousands of bodies lying unretrieved beneath rubble.
To end the horror we need to end capitalism and fight for a socialist world.
The Socialist Party is fighting for:
- End the siege – for the permanent withdrawal of the Israeli military from the occupied territories
- For a mass struggle of the Palestinians, under their own democratic control, to fight for liberation
- For the building of independent workers’ parties in Palestine and Israel and links between them
- For an independent, socialist Palestinian state, alongside a socialist Israel, with guaranteed rights for all minorities, as part of the struggle for a socialist Middle East
- No trust in the capitalist politicians, internationally or in Britain. Fight to build a workers’ party in Britain that fights for socialism and internationalism
