The ‘tough decisions’ facing senior Labour politicians seem to be ‘how many free tickets to Taylor Swift do I want?’ and ‘is my wardrobe large enough for all my new freebies?’ Super-rich donors don’t give MPs gifts because they’re modern-day Santa Clauses. They do it for influence and access to make sure we pay the economic price while their profits are secure.
And its not just MPs out of touch with reality. Starmer’s top aide Sue Gray is being paid a handsome £170,000 a year.
These scandals drive home how the people who hold the levers of power of government live lives completely divorced from the rest of us. They make decisions on behalf of their big-business backers and we face the consequences. Our tough decisions are between heating and eating, doing anything we can to make ends meet.
The political system is rotten – we need workers’ representatives on a worker’s wage. And with the right to recall them to hold them accountable to our class so they can’t be bought off with football tickets or fancy glasses.
