Rae Cox, Oxford Socialist Party
As the ceasefire was breaking, 100 showed up to show solidarity with Palestine.
There was still clear anger, but a low mood, as many could not see a way forward.
However, when Socialist Party members put forward the examples of general strikes in South Korea and Israel, and the potential of that kind of action to end war, people began to listen closer.
We found an openness to the idea that mass struggle of Palestinians, as well as mass movements of workers in Israel against Netanyahu, can together offer a way forward to bring an end to the war.
And that’s not the only part of our socialist programme that got a larger echo. There was a keen interest in the idea of a new mass workers’ party.
With Labour squeezing disabled people, the elderly, and other workers, all while increasing defence spending to kill yet more in Ukraine and Gaza, the need for a working-class alternative to war and austerity is more urgent than ever.
