Chris Newby, Tower Hamlets Socialist Party
In a world full of turmoil, it is vital that we get out a clear socialist message as widely as possible. We do this through the posters, placards, and leaflets that we produce, and use on our regular Socialist Party campaign stalls.
But to produce this material, we need to raise finances. We have no rich backers, and rely on donations from people like you, who buy the Socialist.
In Tower Hamlets Socialist Party in east London, we plan our fundraising campaign several weeks before the start of the new ‘fighting fund’ quarter.
We have increased the amount of regular campaign activity, to reach a wider number of people, but also to give more of our members and supporters the opportunity to take part.
We sell the Socialist paper at our local hospital on a Thursday morning, at a local tube station early Friday evening, and a campaign stall on a Saturday lunchtime. We are hoping to add another weekly station Socialist paper sale on a Monday morning.
We regularly raise between £10 and £20 per week from these activities. We also plan extra fundraising events to make sure we smash our target.
We had a successful ‘radicals and revolutionaries’ walk around Tower Hamlets, which raised £96, and a clothes party, together with Camden and Haringey Socialist Party, which raised over £150.
We really value the posters and leaflets that the Socialist Party produces. Our postering around the borough has been successful in advertising our local meetings and campaign activity.
Several people stop to buy our Socialist paper and donate to the fighting fund, because they have seen our posters. Several people have come to our regular meetings after seeing our posters. Some have joined the Socialist Party.
We are planning a Marx walk in central London, a BBQ, and a car boot sale, alongside our regular campaign stalls. We are also planning for a day-long campaign stalls at Queen Mary University freshers fair in September.
Can you help out on any of the local Socialist Party campaign activity in your area? Or is there any fundraising you can do to make sure the Socialist Party smashes our fighting fund target?
