Archie Harrison, Worcester Socialist Party
“It’s about sending a message, to make it clear that young people in Britain do not welcome US president Donald Trump”. That’s what we have been telling people we have met on our many campaign stalls in Worcester.
On 17 September, Trump will begin his official state visit to Britain, with the red carpet being rolled out by spineless Keir Starmer. Socialist Students is organising for walkouts in as many schools and colleges as possible.
Trump is a stark representation of what the profit-driven capitalist system means. His government continues to support genocidal slaughter by the Israeli state in Palestine. Showing his profit-above-all-else motivations, he speaks of creating a ‘Gaza Riviera’ in Palestine. Meanwhile, thousands of Palestinians starve and hundreds are shot in cold blood trying to access food.
Trump has attacked the rights of women, LGBTQ+ people and other minority groups, and he supports mass deportations. He brags about helping billionaires getting even richer, and tells fossil fuel bosses to “drill baby, drill”. It’s no wonder that he is increasingly unpopular in the US and that workers and young people are beginning to rise up and protest, like in LA.
By walking out against Trump, young people in Britain can make our mark on events and show that we are not prepared to accept a future of war, oppression and environmental destruction.
With just over a month to go, we have been running stalls, handing out leaflets and putting up posters. Sign up to help build for the walkouts in your area!
