Oxfordshire County Council planned to close three fire stations. But a determined campaign by the Fire Brigades Union (FBU), including a 94% vote for potential strike action in an indicative ballot, backed up by public support, has defeated these plans and saved the stations.
Mark Chapman, FBU southern Regional Secretary, told the Socialist:
This campaign showed what can be achieved through straightforward but determined community and political engagement at every level of the union. From station meetings to public campaigning, from local councillors to wider political pressure, members took responsibility for winning the argument beyond the workplace.
It demonstrates that cuts-driven agendas can be resisted when workers are organised, confident, and rooted in their communities.
This result should give confidence to firefighters and trade unionists everywhere.
The task now is to build on this win. We will continue to push for genuine investment in fire and rescue services, based on what communities actually need.
This experience underlines the importance of strong local organisation, political confidence, and member-led campaigning. Those are the lessons we will take forward, in Oxfordshire and beyond.
Ultimately, firefighters know their communities, and the public trusts them when they speak out in defence of frontline provision.
