Keri Andrews, TUSC candidate in Manor Park, Rushmoor District Council
Owning and driving your own vehicle is becoming more and more unaffordable as we enter a fuel crisis due to Trump’s war on Iran. The prices at the pumps are going up, while BP continues to make massive profits. It is increasingly clear that we need free and accessible public transport. This is possible. Luxembourg, for example, has made all public transport free since 2020, saving each household an average of 110 euros, reducing cars on the road and fuel consumption
Councils already subsidise public transport, it would be entirely possible to increase subsidies to make it free and expand services. Councils can act on this now, including by bringing services back in-house.
Free public transport would mean households would save and carbon emissions will be cut – it is time to make a real change that unites neighbourhoods and makes services available and places them back into the hands of us, instead of making profits for big business.
