Starmer announces social media ban for young people

A social media ban for under-16s will come into force at the beginning of 2027, according to government plans. “Children will be given back their childhoods thanks to government action”, according to the government press release.

Many young people will ask, ‘What government action is coming to give us a decent future then?’ With youth services still ravaged by austerity, a threat to roll back on the pledge to end the youth exemption from the National Living Wage, and over a million young unemployed.

In March, the socialist published an article ‘For democratic control of social media – nationalise!’. Accompanying the article, two young Socialist Party expressed their opposing views on proposals for a ban.
