In 1864, Karl Marx set up the International Workers’ Association (IWA) to bring together workers, socialists, activists and organised labour movements across borders. This was what Marxists refer to as the First International.
Marx understood that capitalism is an international system. That is why his famous call “Workers of the world, unite!” remains so powerful today. Workers across the globe have far more in common with each other than with the bosses and the capitalist class which profits from our labour.
The Socialist Party follows in that tradition. Our predecessor, Militant, founded the Committee for a Workers’ International (CWI), precisely to help towards building a united international workers’ organisation capable of challenging capitalism.
Today, the CWI is 52 years old and has a proud record of Marxist analysis of the current conjuncture of capitalism and the perspective for world socialism. Our confidence in Marxist ideas and the working class, as the force able to get rid of capitalism, has brought serious revolutionaries in different countries towards us, and we are taking steps, some small and some in leaps, forward.
Now more than ever, this task is urgent. Capitalism is destroying our lives, livelihoods and our planet. It is holding back social advancement while protecting profit and the interests of a tiny minority.
The task is clear – we need socialism, and we need it all over the world. This summer, the International Executive Committee (IEC) – the elected leadership of the CWI – will meet in Berlin. The IEC meeting is taking place in an increasingly volatile and polarised period. Delegates from Europe, Africa, Asia, Latin America, the USA and Canada will come together to discuss perspectives, theory and tactics, and coordinate our work.
We are raising funds to help make this meeting possible, including supporting travel costs for those who otherwise may not be able to attend. Please donate today and support the fight to build an international workers’ organisation capable of challenging capitalism and fighting for socialism across the world.
