Election campaign press event

TUSC election campaign press event

A TUSC press release:

The Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC) will be holding a press event to launch its local election campaign on Friday 9th May. It will mark the biggest left challenge to Labour for 60 years. The coalition, which was co-founded by Bob Crow when he was leader of the RMT transport union, calls for councils to set ‘no-cuts’ budgets.

Speakers from organisations involved in TUSC will be speaking at the event, including representatives of the RMT and socialist organisations. The event will come at the end of five days of strike action by the RMT on London Underground.

Also at the launch will be an array of TUSC candidates; TUSC is fielding 560 local election candidates and in London three directly-elected mayoral candidates.

Some of the candidates from around the country will be present at the press launch, including:

Southampton rebel councillor Keith Morrell; striking Care UK workers from Doncaster; leading members of the RMT, Prison Officers Association (POA), Fire Brigades Union (FBU), Unite the union, civil servants’ union PCS, Unison, postal workers’ union CWU and National Union of Teachers (NUT); people affected by the bedroom tax and involved in campaigns against it; and others.

All TUSC candidates pledge to:
  • Oppose all cuts to council jobs, services, pay and conditions
  • Refuse to implement the Bedroom Tax
  • Reject increases in council tax, rent and service charges to compensate for government cuts
  • Campaign for the introduction of a Living Wage above the minimum wage
  • Vote for councils to refuse to implement the cuts and set a budget that meets the needs of the local community and demand that the government makes up the shortfall
  • Support all workers’ struggles against cuts and privatisation

The TUSC press launch will be held on Friday 9th May, 11am, Dinsdale Young room, Central Hall Westminster, Storey’s Gate, Westminster, London SW1H 9NH.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions to the main speakers and to do individual interviews with some of the candidates.
