We need socialist councillors who can give a voice for working-class people against austerity, greedy landlords, privatisation and public service closures.
The gap between the rich and the rest of us has never been wider, but the difference between the major parties has never been narrower.
Labour councillors choose to implement the cuts demanded by the Tory government rather than choosing to stand up for working-class people and set ‘no-cuts’ needs budgets.
Unlike Tory-lite Labour councillors, socialist councillors would resist Tory austerity instead of passing on savage cuts. The Socialist Party fights with workers, trade unionists and communities for no-cuts people’s budgets and the building of a mass workers’ movement that could halt Tory austerity and win the funding our communities need.
Working-class people need a new mass workers’ party that stands up for us. And a new way of running the economy – a socialist way – to benefit the majority, not just the billionaires.
The Socialist Party is part of the Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition (TUSC), set up to enable trade unionists, community campaigners and socialists to stand together against the pro-austerity establishment parties. It is a beginning – a step towards the kind of party we need that can deliver a socialist alternative to austerity.

We say:
• Councils must set no-cuts budgets, based on the needs of the 99% not the 1%
• End the cost of living squeeze!
• Re-nationalise energy companies and the other privatised utilities
• Restore youth services, reopen libraries, reverse social care cuts and re-employ sacked council workers
• For a decent future for young people – free education and training, and decent, well-paid jobs for all
• Restore domestic abuse services and street lighting
• For a mass council house building programme – reject council tax and rent increases
• Fully fund the NHS – stop privatisation and give staff a 15% pay rise
• Combat climate change, including with a free-to-use, expanded, renationalised public transport system.
• End low pay. Wage rises for all that at least keep pace with inflation. A £15 an hour minimum wage now
• Take the wealth off the 1%. We need socialist change!
