Workers' health jeopardised

A NORFOLK GP told the socialist that her surgery was phoned by the occupational health nurse at a Bernard Matthews' plant.

The nurse was with a worker with respiratory problems and she didn't know what to do! The GP told her to read the government information sent to every health unit, but the nurse had not even seen it.

It is no surprise that Bernard Matthews has so little care for the health of the workers he super-exploits. He brings in cheap migrant labour, mostly Polish and Portuguese, works them to the point of physical damage and then sacks them.

This same GP sees Bernard Matthews' workers with repetitive strain injury in their shoulders and arms. They request moving to a different job and are told to 'give it another few months'. Then when the few months are up, just before they have been employed long enough to get employment rights, they are sacked.
