Unique care workers lobby

THE SACKED careworkers at Unique in Huddersfield held a lobby outside the offices of Kirklees council in advance of the full council meeting on 28 February. They have had no response to their demand that the council take the sacked workers back 'in-house' and end their contract with Unique and their bullying style of management.

The women handed out leaflets explaining the dispute and collected signatures on petitions from council workers who were outraged at the way they had been treated.

The women are determined to get justice as workers and furious that they have been prevented from doing their jobs which they were dedicated to. Kirklees council's chief executive declined my request to meet with him as the women's elected member of UNISON's Local Government Service Group. He thought it would be 'unproductive' at this stage.

If he thinks the sacked Unique careworkers are a problem which will go away if ignored, he is very much mistaken. These women are angry and determined to get even.
