Your new police terror chiefGORDON BROWN'S government is still trying to convince every MP that a draconian 42-day maximum detention without charge period is needed for 'terror suspects'. The growing worries about the future of human rights in Britain were not helped by a new police appointment. Metropolitan Police Commander John McDowall was the officer who launched the botched surveillance operation that ended in the tragic death of Jean Charles de Menezes, the innocent Brazilian worker killed in 2005. Jean Charles was shot by police officers after being mistaken for a 'terrorism suspect'. Commander McDowall has just been promoted. He will become National Co-ordinator of Terrorist Investigations, Britain's top counter-terrorist role at New Scotland Yard. In this issue: Socialist Party NHS campaign
