PCS suspends strikes

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) strike for 31 January has been suspended as management have been forced into talks. That would have been our 19th day of strike action in less than five years.

Jane Aitchison, PCS DWP President, personal capacity

While the revenue and customs (HMRC) dispute is over jobs, our current dispute is over an imposed three-year below-inflation pay offer. We took two days of strike action on 6 and 7 December, which were very well supported.

Getting management into talks over this is no mean feat. We have delivered strike action and then secured talks over the government's policy of public-sector pay restraint.

The Public and Commercial Services union (PCS) in DWP represents 120,000 staff.

  • The HMRC strike was called off after the union secured an agreement for a moratorium on office closures and job cuts during detailed talks with management.
