Introduction
The great French revolution of 1789 was to the Europe of the late eighteenth century and the first part of the nineteenth century what the Russian revolution is to the twentieth Century. It was the third major capitalist (bourgeois) revolution, preceded by the English revolution of the seventeenth century and the American revolution of 1776. But it had a much greater impact than its predecessors and was, up to then, the single greatest event in human history.
