Journalists at The Lancet, the 200-year-old medical journal, took three days of strike action from 19 October in a fight for fairer pay.

Members of the National Union of Journalists (NUJ) face rising workloads and falling living standards, with many worse off than five years ago. Meanwhile, the journal’s owner, publishing giant Elsevier, made an adjusted operating profit of £1.035 billion in 2025.

Despite these huge profits, Elsevier has refused the workers’ pay demands and walked away from negotiations.

After the strike, NUJ members will begin working to rule, causing significant disruption to the journal’s operations.
