While Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves have talked about the need for cuts to placate the markets, you might have to ‘bear’ with those in charge of the pomp and circumstance for the royal family.
The price of bearskin hats worn by soldiers walking around Buckingham Palace has jumped by 30% to over two grand each in the last year. Over the last decade, spending on these fancy hats, which for some reason have to be made from one dead bear each, has cost over a million pounds.
And the cost-of-living squeeze hasn’t affected King Charles. Thanks to increased profits from the royal estate, he’s getting £45 million more next year!
If workers, the majority in the country, had democratic control of the land, investments and wherever else the royals have stashed their cash, imagine all the nurses, public investment works and all the other things that people need, that wealth could be put towards.
