At the time of writing, over two million signatures have made their way onto a petition calling for a general election as “the current Labour Government have gone back on the promises they laid out in the lead-up to the last election.”

Despite being promoted by right-wing Tory and Reform MPs, retweeted by maverick billionaire Elon Musk and lists of postcodes shared to allow people from other countries to add names to the list, there is clearly anger at the Labour government.

This government, elected by just 20% of the electorate, has already scrapped universal Winter Fuel Payments to pensioners, kept the two-child benefit cap and is continuing with cuts to public spending. The Tories were swept from office because they were so hated, and Labour continuing their policies will face hatred as well.

Socialist Party members organise against any attack on the working class, we want rid of Labour and all pro-capitalist politicians. A Kemi Badenoch or a Nigel Farage-led government would not improve the lives of working-class people. We need our own party, with the organised working-class at its heart and armed with a socialist programme, to provide a real alternative to Starmer’s Labour and right-wing opportunists.
