She says she’s not guilty, but Labour city minister responsible for anti-corruption Tullip Siddiq has resigned after accusations of… corruption. Siddiq’s aunt, Sheikh Hasina, is the Bangladesh ex-prime minister overthrown by a popular mass movement last Summer.
None of us get to choose our family. But then again, not many of us get gifted a London flat by our aunt’s property developer political friends. Sheikh Hasina, and other leading figures of her Awami League party, face a litany of corruption charges which they deny. What we do know is that her government’s state forces repressed student protests last year, killing hundreds. And that, despite reported ‘growth’ in the economy, millions of Bangladeshi workers continue to be super-exploited by capitalist bosses.
What squeaky clean individual is going to take Siddiq’s anti-corruption role? Emma Reynolds, who before the last election was a managing director for big-business lobbyists ‘The CityUK’.
